Make your own LiveJournal Trading Card! Brought to you by Alright, if you really want to know... -- I was born and raised in Anglesey, North Wales, and went to school on the island till I was 18. I was destined to become an Arts student. -- So I became one. I attended Queens' College, Cambridge University, for three years, where I studied Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic (ASNaC), followed (after a year "out" travelling in Australia and working in Cambridge) by an MPhil--same subject, same college. I primarily studied Germanic languages (Old English, Old Norse/Icelandic, Old Saxon and Gothic, plus the proto- stuff) and linguistics, Middle Welsh (plus some earlier bits and a smattering of Middle Cornish), as well as Historical Linguistics, some Latin and history (primarly Anglo-Saxon, having swiftly dropped British and Scandinavian history after a disastrous exam result!). I wrote a nice and deeply fascinating Masters thesis about the semantics of Old English words for horses, which isn't published, as I am lazy and hate footnotes. (If you really want to know my findings, ask.) I have since been given another Masters for doing nothing, which is a Good Thing. More of that kind of quid pro nada, please. -- I now live in Wales and am currently a PhD student at the University of Wales, Bangor, researching language mixing in Welsh-English bilinguals. -- In my spare time I like writing Stuff, primarily an Anglo-Saxon war novel set in the 7th century (The Red Saxon is complete, and I'll be sending it round agents soon, hopefully), and various libretti/plays/screenplays/poems/short stories. You know, the usual caboodle. A recent pet project is translating The Mikado into Welsh. Modified rapture (Gorfoledd gymhedrol). It's now complete, and only lacks a production company ... -- Before you ask, my name is Welsh and doesn't "mean" anything (AFAIK). It's the name of a youth who becomes Arthur's knight in Peredur uab Efrawc, and the name also appears in the Gododdin. -- Galla i siarad Cymraeg, felly teimla'n rhydd i flogio'n yr iaith bêr honno os y mynni! Please visit this site: Kymro Kanol: Pumet keink y Mabinogyon, as its author is an unemployed sot who could do with the attention. You won't, however, get much out of it unless you really like Middle Welsh ... I've written/edited a few articles on Wikipedia. Check out my user page for more details, though I don't have much time these days. I'm an active member (and junior conductor) of Aelwyd yr Ynys, a group associated with Urdd Gobaith Cymru, dedicated to singing and performing, and just a little bit of drinking. And finally ... if you want to find what rhymes with what in Welsh, click here! Great, huh? Yes. ![]() | |||||||||||||||||||
